Grand Duchess Elizabeth was the older sister of Empress Alexandra, born Princess of Hesse. She was married to Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia.

In 1905 Grand Duke Sergei was torn apart by a Socialist's bomb in the Moscow Kremlin in front of his wife. Soon thereafter the young and beautiful Grand Duchess became a nun and spent her fortune on charity, particularly on building the convent of Sts. Martha and Mary of which she was appointed an abbess.

She ended her earthly path tending on or about July 5(18), 1918, buried alive in a mineshaft near Alapaevsk in the Ural, tending to the wounds of those buried next to her (as proven by the White investigators who recovered their bodies), some 100 mi. away from where her royal sister had been slain a few days before.
